As far as physical development went, Musan was above av erage for a child his age, so he, too, was able to push Michio's wheelchair on gentle slopes where the road was paved. He was obviously proud to be helping his little brother this way. The trail, along the top ofa sheer cliff, had been made when this part ofthe coast wasfirst developed, but apparently no work had been done on it since, so although theflagstones were carefully placed, it was really rather dangerous. There would be sudden bends with no protective railings and the waves sucking at the rocks directly below.

At first he seemed indifferent to thefact that paralysis was a burden he would have to live with for the rest of his life. It wasn 't just that he no longer cracked Jokes or clowned around in the way he had before (he was a clever lad, who had always enjoyed making people laugh). He seemed to have the attitude of someone watching an actor play his role on a stage-it was thzs actor who was now paralyzed from the waist down and would have to learn a new way of doing things. He was very quiet, strangely calm.

That blunt way of talking Marie has is usual ly so convinc ing, " my wife went on, "but I 'm afraid it rubbed me the wrong way today. And after she had us all stunned into silence, she got all the more defiant; it was as though she were challenging us. " 27 And then she said: 'Sanae was lovely, kind, even had a sense of humor, and so we mourn her and want to commemorate her death. The whole idea behind this book makes me realize that something an American woman writer I've been reading since I was a student once said was absolutely right.
