He wanted all of them to get a good look at the two heavy hitters from MIT, thus ensuring that they would never have much of a future at the Showboat. The MIT team continued to play in Atlantic City, although more and more infrequently. They also made periodic flights to the Caribbean, but those games weren’t a whole lot better. John Chang looked at those trips to the islands at more of a perk for team members than as a great opportunity to make money. The increased difficulty in playing conditions convinced John Chang that he might need to look elsewhere to make his fortune in life.

But he was far from being one-dimensional. He also developed a passion for games and competed in a variety of athletic activities. Yet, it was with his brain, not his body, that John Chang stood out from the crowd. As a junior, he went to the national high school chess championships and by his senior year several Ivy League schools were interested in the bright young student. Harvard and Princeton both wanted John to attend their universities, but his dad talked him into going to MIT. His collegiate career started off well and John Chang aced his first test at MIT.

These areas were so tightly controlled that once when John had a friend come by to visit, he got chewed out by Rose because they didn’t budget for an extra mouth at the table for dinner and they couldn’t afford to feed John’s friend. Despite these hardships, John Chang emulated the strong work ethic of the others in the house and contributed to the project. He wrote code for a file-finding program and tested products designed by the other workers. Blackjack remained on the back burner, although he did slip away for one weekend trip to Vegas to pick up some cash, since the start-up company was paying him only in stock options.
